Local search is a different game
Ranking nationally is a content competition. Ranking locally is a relevance and trust competition, and small businesses can win it far more easily than they expect.
The checklist
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Every field matters: categories, service areas, hours, description, and photos. Profiles with complete information consistently earn more calls than half-filled ones.
2. Keep your contact details consistent everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical on your website, your profile, and every directory that lists you. Inconsistency erodes the trust signals search engines use to place you.
3. Build a page for each service
One page per service beats one page listing ten. Each page can then target the terms people actually search, with its own title and description.
4. Add genuine location context
Mention the areas you serve naturally in your copy, and include a real location section. Do not stuff city names into paragraphs β write for the customer standing in that city.
5. Collect reviews continuously
Ask every satisfied customer, and ask by text with a direct link. Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking and conversion signals you have.
6. Fix your technical basics
- Mobile-friendly layout
- A fast, stable site
- An XML sitemap submitted to Search Console
- Local business structured data on every page
7. Track calls, not just clicks
Use call tracking, or at least separate phone numbers per channel, so you can see which efforts actually produce conversations.
Local SEO rewards consistency. A profile updated every month will outrank a perfect one that was abandoned.
Where to start
If you only do one thing this month, complete your Google Business Profile. It is the highest-return hour most service businesses can spend.
